Scientists in the classroom: A model industry-school partnership
- R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Winston-Salem, NC (United States)
- Science and Math Alliance, Winston-Salem, NC (United States); and others
Scientists at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company (RJR) established a partnership with the Western Triad Region of the North Carolina Science and Mathematics Alliance to successfully sponsor a unique hands-on industry-school education program for more than 300 grade school students. The goal of this initiative was to promote and improve science and technology education in the Western Triad Region of North Carolina by incorporating relevant examples of applied science and technology into the fifth grade classroom. Fifth-grade students and teachers worked directly with RJR scientists to design and implement classroom science and technology projects. The students summarized their efforts into formal scientific poster presentations, and presented them at an evening science symposium held at RJR`s state-of-the-art research facility, the Bowman Gray Technical Center.
