EM&R issues latest resource estimates

The Government of Canada`s division of Energy, Mines and Resources (EM&R) has issued its latest findings on Canada`s uranium resource estimates, production capability, exploration expenditures and other details of the industry. The results indicate that Canada`s status as the world`s leading uranium-producing nation will likely continue into the next century. EM&R`s Uranium Resource Appraisal Group annual survey indicated that total known uranium resources are estimated at 559,000 metric tonnes uranium (MTU; equivalent to 1.45 billion pounds U{sub 3}O{sub 8}) as of the end of 1987, down about 1.5 percent from the 1986 figure. Thus, new delineation and discoveries did not quite offset the record 1987 production level of 32.4 million pounds U{sub 3}O{sub 8}. Known resources are defined as those which could be recovered from mined ore at a cost of C$300/kgU (roughly US$$100 per pound U{sub 3}O{sub 8}) or less. About half of the total is categorized as being available at a cost of US$$50 per pound or less. (NUEXCO considers that categorization to be extremely conservative and would classify at least 80 percent of those resources in the lowest cost category of US$30 or less). As has been the case over the last several years, the geographical redistribution of resources toward western Canada continued, primarily because Saskatchewan was the main focus of exploration and delineation activity.
