1987 US uranium production activities

In 1987, political and legal uncertainties continued to dominate the US uranium industry. These uncertainties - the US Producer vs. DOE lawsuit, potential legislation and the pending Free Trade Agreement with Canada - acted to limit development and to constrain expenditures on all but the most economically attractive projects. Overall, the US uranium production industry was fairly stable, although at rather low production levels, during 1987. Data available at the end of the year indicate that production from all sources totaled approximately 12,500,000 pounds U{sub 3}O{sub 8}, a decrease of 10 percent from 1986 production of 13,900,000 pounds. Changes at three production facilities largely accounted for the drop in output: (1) Cotter Corporation`s Schwartzwalder mine in Colorado suspended operations in January; (2) USX Corporation`s (formerly US Steel) south Texas solution mining operations changed over from production to restoration in early 1987; and (3) Production at the Umetco Minerals/Energy Fuels Nuclear White Mesa mill declined by 400,000 pounds to 4,500,000 pounds U{sub 3}O{sub 8}. The distribution of production between conventional, by-product and solution mining remained similar to 1986.
