World uranium production in 1988, totaling approximately 96.8 million pounds U{sub 3}O{sub 8}, did not change significantly from the 95.4 million pounds produced in 1987, despite significant changes at several production centers. The opening of Australia`s Olympic Dam mine, for example, offset the depletion of stockpiles at Nabarlek, and the closure of three South African mines was somewhat balanced by Vaal Reefs` 12 percent production increase. Additionally, the Soviet Union entered the market through enriched uranium product (EUP) sales, while Brazil shut down its production facilities during 1988.
