First quarter 1988 output from Chamber of Mines producers totaled 2,499,000 pounds U{sub 3}O{sub 8}, a 1.3 percent increase from the fourth quarter of 1987. Minor production increases by Driefontein Consolidated, ERGO, Chemwes, Vaal Reefs and Western Areas were almost offset by minor decreases in production at Bufflesfontein, Freegold, Harmony, Hartebeestfontein and Randfontein. These production figures are more in line with the production levels that existed prior to last year`s strike difficulties with the National Union of Mineworkers. Total production for South Africa in 1988 is expected to increase slightly from the 1987 level of 10.3 million pounds U{sub 3}O{sub 8}, because the miners strike was resolved.
