How electric and gas companies can leverage their systems for a changing market
This article lists a number of examples in which electric and gas utilities can leverage their technical assets in a de-regulated market and provide additional services, especially in the communications industry. In addition to the extensive internal communications systems owned by most utilities, it is felt that the installed technical assets of many utilities can be easily modified or adapted to provide wider-ranging telecommunications services. The example is given of a pipeline company that installed fiber-optics cables inside its unused pipes. Costing $120M to build, this network was sold recently for $2.5B. Several other examples of utility initiatives in this arena are noted, as is the present regulatory climate.
