Title: PVUSA, Photovoltaics for Utility Scale Applications: A national cooperative research project for directly harnessing the power of the sun to generate commercial quantities of electricity. Third quarterly technical report 1991

Each of the five arrays planned for the project`s Emerging Module Technology Segment-1 (EMT-1) Davis procurement are complete, along with one EMT host site array in operation on the island of Maui, Hawaii. IPC delivered the final 200 modules for their 180 kW US-1 system in August. By the quarter`s end, IPC had installed the array`s 1100 modules, interconnecting wiring, PCU, and tracking systems, and began field acceptance testing. Wet megger tests on the first two and one-half rows (of 11) showed a failure rate of more than 9%, mostly due to inconsistencies in the module interconnecting wiring. Field acceptance tests have been suspended until Mobil resolves the wiring problem. Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for the US-2 and EMT-3 procurements were issued in July and August, respectively. Three US-2 and 13 EMT-3 bids were received. Bid selections are scheduled for November. On August 7, a SSI field representative received an electrical shock when his ungloved hand accidentally contacted a high voltage dc terminal while malting measurements with a hand-held multimeter. He was hospitalized overnight and has since been recovering at home. Meanwhile, SSI continued readying the proposed 174 kW US-1 system for full operation, mostly troubleshooting its two Dickerson inverters, which have been tripping off line frequently. The combined quarterly output for the six complete EMT-1 arrays and one US-1 system in limited operation was 97,900 ac kWh, the same energy used by 65 average homes over the same period.
