As a result of recent legislation, large numbers of electric vehicles (EVs) will be on the road in only a few years. To support their successful introduction, major portions of an EV infrastructure remain to be established, and important infrastructure-related issues need to be addressed. EPRI has assumed a leadership role in this area by funding key R&D projects, coordinating utility involvement, and providing information to utilities and others. As part of its efforts EPRI has established the infrastructure Working Committee, a forum for identifying and resolving EV infrastructure issues. This summary outlines the key role that the utility industry will play in EV infrastructure development and deployment, and discusses EPRI`s accomplishments to date and planned activities in this area.
