For years, off-road electric vehicles (EVs), such as golf cars and industrial lift trucks, have been mass produced to meet the needs of certain niche markets. Today, off-road EVs are finding an expanding market as a means toward improving air quality. Expansion of the off-road EV market will enhance utilities` environmental programs, provide increased utility revenue, and utilize the electric utility infrastructure now in place. However, for the utility industry to realize these benefits, some types of off-road EVs must be made more cost-effective and energy efficient, some of the existing off-road EV infrastructure may need enhancement to supply the growing off-road EV market, and off-road EV users need information on off-road EVs` high performance and ease of use. EPRI is working with EV manufacturers, utilities, and others to improve off-road EVs` energy performance and market share, and provide utilities the information they need. To meet these objectives, EPRI is currently undertaking three projects -- Cleaner Lawn Care, International Airport Electrification, and an Off-Road EV Consortium. These projects present a variety of opportunities for utility participation.
