Title: Low temperature kinetic study of the formation of the superconducting A15 phase in the Nb--Al--Ge system

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/7034295· OSTI ID:7034295

A kinetic study has been made of the reactions occurring in the Nb-Al-Ge system at temperatures below 1000/sup 0/C. This study has resulted in a two step heat treatment prior to the A15 formation reaction to be used to control the A15 formed. It was found that a Ge rich phase can be used to control the diffusion rate of the Al into the Nb. The interface between this barrier phase and the Nb matrix serves as the reaction site for the formation of the A15.
