Title: Use of a distributed movie-making system for presentation of fluid flow data

This thesis describes work done to develop techniques for the graphical presentation of time-dependent 2- or 3-dimensional flow fields generated by fluid modelling together with a distributed computing software architecture to produce the graphics. The software runs on UNIX systems and uses interprocess communication with a TCP/IP based network protocol to implement the architecture. The system components provide for communication between a video workstation consisting of a microcomputer controller, a frame buffer, a video recording device, and a front end system. The use of particle advection to graphically display the flow fields proper was investigated. The associated numerical calculations for transforming the data into graphical form are described, as are the relative merits and problems involved with this type of graphical display. The representation of the object(s) perturbing of constraining the flow is an important topic in itself, and issues involved in the implementation of features of the software which affect both the display of the object(s) and the flow field are discussed. An analysis is given of the use of video recording and playback as the final manner of presentation for a given data set. 48 refs., 42 figs., 4 tabs.
