Title: ALUMINUM-ELECTROCLADDING STUDIES FOR PROPOSED OMR FUEL ELEMENTS

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4295711· OSTI ID:4295711

Dense, adherent claddings of aluminum up to 25 mils thickness were produced on nickel-plated uranium cores by electrodeposition. A continuously regenerutive etheral bath containing lithium hydride and aluminum chloride was used. Metallurgical bonding of a aluminum electrocladdings to nickel-plated uranium was achieved using a thermopneumatic pressing process. Upon completion of the bonding step with each particular specimen, evaluation tests were carried out to determine cladding cortinuity, bond integrity, and cladding microstructure. (auth)
