SEMI-ANNUAL SUMMARY RESEARCH REPORT IN PHYSICS FOR JANUARY THROUGH JUNE 1958
Several corrections to the theoretical beta spectrum of P/sup 32/ decay were investigated. The magnetic properties of dysprosium are discussed. A 180 deg permanent magnet spectrometer was used to determine the transition energies in Yb/sup 169/ and Tm/sup 170/. In the activity observed after irradiation of Tb by 64-Mev bremsstrahlung, 18 transitions were detected, with energies between 89 and 2060 kev. The mean life of positrons in pure yttrium metal was measured to be ~2.0 x 10/sup -10/ sec and in Na/sub x/WO/sup 3/(X = 0.789), ~2.6 x 10/sup -10/ sec. The photoproton yield from Be/sup 9/ was measured by observing the beta activity of the daughter nucleus, Li/sup 8/. Nuclear spectroscopic studies of Ba/ sup 133/ and Xe/sup 133/ decay are reported. The thermal diffusivity and electrical resistivity of Johnson-Matthey copper were measured in the 50 to 1000 deg C temperature range. The irfrared transmission spectra of magnesium silicide were studied at temperatures from 85 to 370 deg K. Measurements were made of the thermoelectric power of Mg/sub 2/Si from 300 to 1000 deg . Work on the measurement of Hall mobility in semiconductors at microwave frequencies is reported. The electrical resistivity of Na/sub x/WO/sub 3/ as a function of sedium concentration is discussed. Latent heats of sublimation were determined for several of the rare earths. The electric conductivity of diamond as a function of temperature was investigated. The superconducting transition temperature for gadolinium-lanthanum alloys was determined. The magnetic properties of Gd/sub 3/C and Tb/sub 3/C were investigated. A preliminary study of the dependence upon external pressure of the Br/sup 79/ and Br//sup 81/ nuclear quadrupole resonances in TiBr/sub 4/ found these to possess a negative pressure coefficient in the temperature range --20 to --30 deg C. A theoretical investigatlon of the effect of electroncoupled nuclear spin-spin interactions on the nuclear quadrupole resonance spectrum of Cl/sup 35/ in TiCl/sub 3/ and HgCl/ sub 2/ was performed. Abstracts of papers submitted for publication are included. (For preceding period see ISC-975.) (W.D.M.)
