The goal of this project is to study the fundamental physics of the magnetic skyrmion, an emergent topological spin texture with whirlpool-like spin winding configuration. Distinguishing functionality of the skyrmion can be achieved only when its exotic topological properties are fully understood and control of skyrmions is mastered. In this project, special attention is paid to creation and manipulation of interfacial skyrmions, and skyrmions in confined or hybrid structures. Relevant topics on interfacial magnetism in general are also covered. This project also promotes the skyrmion physics in national laboratories through partnership with the Argonne National Laboratory (ANL).
