Intelligent Optical Systems (IOS) has developed the Real-Time In-Situ CO2 Monitoring (RICO2M) system, a fiber optic-based monitoring system capable of the highly sensitive detection of increasing levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in groundwater. In collaboration with the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas at Austin, IOS performed multiple field deployments and validation studies of an in-situ real-time monitoring network. We have developed and demonstrated a multi-channel instrument capable of covering up to eight water wells, with a fabrication cost of ~$5,000, which compares very favorably with existing fiber optic monitoring instrumentation for downhole monitoring. Numerous field studies demonstrated the ability of the RICO2M system to detect small leaks of CO2 reaching aquifers, and the capacity of the sensor probe to operate for at least one year before replacement. The final system design was a sensitive CO2 leak detector; further development will be necessary to accurately quantify and monitor CO2 concentrations in real time.
