Potting Adhesion Investigation Using Double Cantilever Beam Tests
- Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Los Alamos, NM (United States)
The adhesive properties of an elastomeric potting material were investigated experimentally using double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens. In these tests, the applied load and opening displacement were measured, with the goal of quantitatively characterizing the adhesive strength of the thin layer of potting material. The DCB tests were also simulated using a finite element model that incorporated an adhesive traction-separation model to represent the compliance of the potting layer and evolving (weakening) strength of the potting-to-metal adhesive interfaces. The test and simulation results were used to determine a range of traction-separation model parameters, expressed in the form of correlated probability distributions, that constitute a good calibration of the model over the range of variability exhibited in the test series.
