Melter Tests with LAW Envelope B Simulants to Support Enhanced Sulfate Incorporation (Final Report, Rev. 0)

This report presents data and detailed analyses of DM10 and DM100 tests performed at the VSL using LAW Envelope B simulants and appropriately optimized glass formers. Separate reports address glass formulation, sulfate solubility and kinetics, feed rheology, and the LAW Envelope A and C melter tests. Part of the work described in this report was originally outlined in a Test Plan that covered more limited objectives. However, with the decision that the demonstrated sulfate removal processes for LAW pretreatment were unacceptable, the Project elected to re-prioritize the remaining Part B1 vitrification development program to make the development and demonstration of a viable vitrification-only sulfate management option the highest priority. Accordingly, the RPP-WTP Project, GTS Duratek, and VSL developed an aggressive schedule by which sulfate-tolerant glass formulations would be developed, tested at the DM10 and DM100 scales, and a representative formulation for each of the three LAW envelopes demonstrated in prolonged tests at the LAW Pilot Melter scale prior to "financial closure." A more generic Test Plan was issued to describe a wider scope of activities concerning sulfate incorporation in LAW glasses. The latter Test Plan recognized the evolving nature of the work and included the DuraMelter 100 tests as an intermediate step to the LAW Pilot DuraMelter. Based on the results of these tests, one formulation was advanced to larger-scale confirmatory testing on the LAW Pilot Melter along with guidance on appropriate operating parameters. Ten batches of feed were successfully processed in the Pilot Melter tests, produced 211,000 kg of glass at production rates of well in excess of the RPP-WTP LAW design basis.
