This testimony summarizes the opinions of NIOSH regarding issues raised by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) concerning neurotoxicity risk assessment. One principal shortcoming of the draft report Principles of Neurotoxicity Risk Assessment is that it lacks consistency in presenting appropriate literature citations for many statements and generalizations it contains. Specific suggestions are offered for inclusion in the sections dealing with methods for assessing human neurotoxicity, methods to assess animal neurotoxicity, and the risk assessment process. Tables and text passages which are confusing or contradictory are pointed out, and suggestions are made to clear up those problems.
