UDI's 1988 report on utility diversification activities includes gas as well as electric utilities. Almost 2000 subsidiaries, holding companies and affiliated companies of some 200 electric and gas utilities are now detailed in this unique report. Among the varied types of business areas represented are: engineering and accounting services; fuel procurement; uranium, coal and gold mining; oil and gas exploration; international and domestic finance; cogeneration and small power development; television, telephone and telecommunications; real estate and land management; trucking and other type of transportation; equipment leasing; pipelines; chemical manufacturing; biotechnology; papermaking; computer systems and software; insurance; and water service. UDI's report identifies parent holding company, subsidiary companies and affiliates (subsidiary companies belonging to parent holding company), area of business activity, SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) codes assigned by UDI staff, and percent ownership, where known. The data were compiled by UDI staff from Annual Reports to Shareholders, FERC Form 1s for more than 120 investor-owned electric utilities and FERC Form 2s for 75 gas utilities. The inventory is generated from UDI's Utility Data Base, more specifically from the UDI Utility DATAPAK corporate files.
