This work discusses the formulation, melt-processing, and properties of PEN and its polyblends with a series of novel semi-flexible thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (TLCP) copolyesters. Several new structure-property relationships for the pure PEN fiber are established with strong implications for further processing studies. Thermal data and morphology data indicate that model predictions involving ideal, high-modulus in-situ reinforcement are insufficient to account for the observed levels of mechanical property enhancement. Evidence from thermal studies shows clearly that the TLCPs can modify the PEN matrix in which they are blended.
