Coal vessel unloading and loading: The story of vertical screws
In recent years continuous unloaders of the mechanical type, as well as others, have made great progress and received greater acceptance among those concerned with the movement of bulk commodities. This is especially true for unloading ships and barges using high speed screw conveyors. In the beginning, some ten years or so ago, the primary products being moved by vertical screw unloaders were cement, fertilizers and grains. However, the crisis in the oil market and the difficulties that began to plague the nuclear industry gave rise to a new interest in coal as a source of energy. This new demand quickly pointed out the need for improved methods of unloading, offering higher continuous capacities, environmental advantages if possible (both for dust control and low noise) and of course providing low operating costs.
