The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) have initiated planning and critical technology development for nuclear rocket propulsion systems for the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI) human and robotic missions to the moon and to Mars. This paper summarizes the activities of the project planning team in fiscal year (FY) 1990 and 1991 and the plans, progress, and results to date.
