Conference · · Transactions of the American Nuclear Society; (United States)
OSTI ID:5980926

Under its space science charter, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has begun to set the stage for robotic exploration of the solar system into the next century. Also, under the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI), NASA has been doing some very exciting mission planning to enable the US to one day take humans back to the moon, and then on to Mars and beyond. This paper discusses the role that nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) is beginning to play in space science and solar system exploration.
