Cut operating costs by firing local fuels
Technology being applied in foreign countries, that may have merit here, is covered in a new annual publication, International Power Systems. Three excerpts are presented below. First, a boiler serving unit at Puente Nuevo in Cordoba is equipped to burn both low-grade anthracite and bituminous coal. Use of marginal quality coal reduces costs. Second, the Voelkingen boiler burns pulverized coal conventionally, but also coal-washes wastes in fluidized-bed combustors (which are detailed). Third, SO/sub 2/ control is accomplished with the Saarberg-Hoelter process, designed to remove SO/sub 2/ from boiler and process wastes with a low-cost line-scrubbing solution and to produce usable gypsum end product. The Voelkingen scrubber is installed inside the station's crossflow cooling tower. Other international systems for power plants will be featured in IPS.
