Davy Powergas Inc. has purchased exclusive license rights on Saarberg-Hoelter Umwelttechnik G.m.b.H.'s desulfurization process for scrubbing flue gas with calcium chloride, which complements Davy's sodium-sulfite-based Wellman-Lord regenerative process. A 40 Mw equivalent scrubber has been prototype-tested at the Weiher, West Ger. powerplant since 1975, and a full-scale 700 Mw multiple-scrubber unit which uses this ''throwaway'' process is now under construction in Europe. The scrubbing liquor, which is in the form of a clear solution rather than suspension and which is made from lime (the primary feed to the process) and HCl, most of which is recycled internally, minimizes plugging and scaling in the scrubber. Absorben-75, a proprietary buffering additive, keeps absorber pH at 5. CaCl/sub 2/ reacts with SO/sub 2/ in the flue gas to form Ca(HSO/sub 3/)/sub 2/ and HCl, most of which reacts immediately with Ca(OH)/sub 2/ dissolved in the CaCl/sub 2/ solution. The mixture then goes to an air oxidizer that converts bisulfite to sulfate, which precipitates. Some CaCl/sub 2/ escapes with gypsum, though this by-product is suitable for wallboard, the firms say.
