Title: Production of $$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$, Λ ($$ \overline{\Lambda}$$), Ξ±, and Ω± in jets and in the underlying event in pp and p–Pb collisions

Abstract

The production of strange hadrons ($$K^{0}_{S}$$, Λ, Ξ±, and Ω±), baryon-to-meson ratios (Λ/$$K^{0}_{S}$$, Ξ/$$K^{0}_{S}$$, and Ω/$$K^{0}_{S}$$), and baryon-to-baryon ratios (Ξ/Λ, Ω/Λ, and Ω/Ξ) associated with jets and the underlying event were measured as a function of transverse momentum (pT) in pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s}$$ = 13 TeV and p Pb collisions at $$\sqrt{s_{NN}}$$ = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The inclusive production of the same particle species and the corresponding ratios are also reported. The production of multi-strange hadrons, Ξ± and Ω±, and their associated particle ratios in jets and in the underlying event are measured for the first time. In both pp and p–Pb collisions, the baryon-to-meson and baryon-to-baryon yield ratios measured in jets differ from the inclusive particle production for low and intermediate hadron pT (0.6–6 GeV/c). Ratios measured in the underlying event are in turn similar to those measured for inclusive particle production. In pp collisions, the particle production in jets is compared with PYTHIA 8 predictions with three colour-reconnection implementation modes. None of them fully reproduces the data in the measured hadron pT region. The maximum deviation is observed for Ξ± and Ω± which reaches a factor of about six. The event multiplicity dependence is further investigated in p–Pb collisions. In contrast to what is observed in the underlying event, there is no significant event-multiplicity dependence for particle production in jets. The presented measurements provide novel constraints on hadronisation and its Monte Carlo description. In particular, they demonstrate that the fragmentation of jets alone is insufficient to describe the strange and multi-strange particle production in hadronic collisions at LHC energies.

abstractNote = {The production of strange hadrons ($K^{0}_{S}$, Λ, Ξ±, and Ω±), baryon-to-meson ratios (Λ/$K^{0}_{S}$, Ξ/$K^{0}_{S}$, and Ω/$K^{0}_{S}$), and baryon-to-baryon ratios (Ξ/Λ, Ω/Λ, and Ω/Ξ) associated with jets and the underlying event were measured as a function of transverse momentum (pT) in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV and p Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The inclusive production of the same particle species and the corresponding ratios are also reported. The production of multi-strange hadrons, Ξ± and Ω±, and their associated particle ratios in jets and in the underlying event are measured for the first time. In both pp and p–Pb collisions, the baryon-to-meson and baryon-to-baryon yield ratios measured in jets differ from the inclusive particle production for low and intermediate hadron pT (0.6–6 GeV/c). Ratios measured in the underlying event are in turn similar to those measured for inclusive particle production. In pp collisions, the particle production in jets is compared with PYTHIA 8 predictions with three colour-reconnection implementation modes. None of them fully reproduces the data in the measured hadron pT region. The maximum deviation is observed for Ξ± and Ω± which reaches a factor of about six. The event multiplicity dependence is further investigated in p–Pb collisions. In contrast to what is observed in the underlying event, there is no significant event-multiplicity dependence for particle production in jets. The presented measurements provide novel constraints on hadronisation and its Monte Carlo description. In particular, they demonstrate that the fragmentation of jets alone is insufficient to describe the strange and multi-strange particle production in hadronic collisions at LHC energies.},

The production of these strange particles is studied separately for particles associated with hard scatterings and the underlying event to shed light on the baryon-to-meson ratio enhancement observed at intermediate transverse momentum (p<sub>T</sub>) in high multiplicity pp and p–Pb collisions. Hard scatterings are selected on an event-by-event basis with jets reconstructed with the anti-k<sub>T</sub> algorithm using charged particles. The production of strange particles associated with jets $$p^{ch}_{T,}$$ <sub>jet</sub> > 10 and $$p^{ch}_{T,}$$ <sub>jet</sub> > 20 GeV/c in p–Pb collisions, and with jet $$p^{ch}_{T,}$$ <sub>jet</sub> > 10 GeV/c in pp collisions is reported as a function of p<sub>T</sub>. Its dependence on angular distance from the jet axis, R(V<sup>0</sup>, jet), for jets with $$p^{ch}_{T,}$$ <sub>jet</sub> > 10 GeV/c in p–Pb collisions is reported as well. The p<sub>T</sub>-differential production spectra of strange particles associated with jets are found to be harder compared to that in the underlying event and both differ from the inclusive measurements. In events containing a jet, the density of the V<sup>0</sup> particles in the underlying event is found to be larger than the density in the minimum bias events. The Λ/$$K^{0}_{S}$$ ratio associated with jets in p–Pb collisions is consistent with the ratio in pp collisions and follows the expectation of jets fragmenting in vacuum. In order to avoid autocorrelation biases, the actual transverse momentum (<em>p<sub>T</sub></em>) spectra of the particles under study and the event activity are measured in different rapidity windows. In the highest multiplicity class, the charged-particle density reaches about 3.5 times the value measured in inelastic collisions. While the yield of protons normalized to pions remains approximately constant as a function of multiplicity, the corresponding ratios of strange hadrons to pions show a significant enhancement that increases with increasing strangeness content. Furthermore, all identified particle-to-pion ratios are shown to depend solely on charged-particle multiplicity density, regardless of system type and collision energy. The evolution of the spectral shapes with multiplicity and hadron mass shows patterns that are similar to those observed in <em>p</em>-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at Large Hadron Collider energies. The obtained <em>p<sub>T</sub></em> distributions and yields are compared to expectations from QCD-based <em>pp</em> event generators as well as to predictions from thermal and hydrodynamic models. Combining the data for both v2{2} and v2{4} also allows us to report the first measurements of the mean elliptic flow, elliptic flow fluctuations, and relative elliptic flow fluctuations for various hadron species. These observables probe the event-by-event eccentricity fluctuations in the initial state and the contributions from the dynamic evolution of the expanding quark–gluon plasma. The characteristic features observed in previous pT-differential anisotropic flow measurements for identified hadrons with two-particle correlations, namely the mass ordering at low pT and the approximate scaling with the number of constituent quarks at intermediate pT, are similarly present in the four-particle correlations and the combinations of v2{2} and v2{4}. In addition, a particle species dependence of flow fluctuations is observed that could indicate a significant contribution from final state hadronic interactions. Antibaryon-to-baryon ratios ( <math> <mrow> <mover> <mi mathvariant="normal">Λ</mi> <mo>¯</mo> </mover> <mo>/</mo> <mi mathvariant="normal">Λ</mi> </mrow><mo>,</mo><mo> </mo><mrow> <msup><mover> <mi mathvariant="normal">Ξ</mi> <mo>¯</mo> </mover><mo>+</mo></msup> <mo>/</mo> <msup><mi mathvariant="normal">Ξ</mi><mo>-</mo></msup> </mrow><mo>,</mo><mo> </mo><mrow> <msup><mover> <mi mathvariant="normal">Ω</mi> <mo>¯</mo> </mover><mo>+</mo></msup> <mo>/</mo> <msup><mi mathvariant="normal">Ω</mi><mo>-</mo></msup> </mrow> </math>) are presented as well and used to test a thermal statistical model and to extract the temperature normalized strangeness and baryon chemical potentials at hadronic freeze-out ( <math> <mrow> <msub> <mi>μ</mi> <mi>B</mi> </msub> <mo>/</mo> <msub> <mi>T</mi> <mi>ch</mi> </msub> </mrow> </math> and <math> <mrow> <msub> <mi>μ</mi> <mi>S</mi> </msub> <mo>/</mo> <msub> <mi>T</mi> <mi>ch</mi> </msub> </mrow> </math>) in central collisions. Strange baryon-to-pion ratios are compared to various model predictions in central collisions for all energies. The nuclear modification factors ( <math> <msub> <mi>R</mi> <mtext>CP</mtext> </msub> </math>) and antibaryon-to-meson ratios as a function of transverse momentum are presented for all collision energies. The <math> <msubsup> <mi mathvariant="normal">K</mi> <mi>S</mi> <mn>0</mn> </msubsup><mo> </mo><msub> <mi>R</mi> <mtext>CP</mtext> </msub> </math> shows no suppression for <math> <msub> <mi>p</mi> <mi>T</mi> </msub> </math> up to 3.5 <math> <mrow> <mi>GeV</mi> <mo>/</mo> <mi>c</mi> </mrow> </math> at energies of 7.7 and 11.5 GeV. The <math> <mrow> <mover> <mi mathvariant="normal">Λ</mi> <mo>¯</mo> </mover> <mo>/</mo> <msubsup> <mi mathvariant="normal">K</mi> <mi>S</mi> <mn>0</mn> </msubsup> </mrow> </math> ratio also shows baryon-to-meson enhancement at intermediate <math> <msub> <mi>p</mi> <mi>T</mi> </msub> </math> ( <math> <mrow> <mo>≈</mo> <mn>2.5</mn> </mrow><mo> </mo><mrow> <mi>GeV</mi> <mo>/</mo> <mi>c</mi> </mrow> </math>) in central collisions at energies above 19.6 GeV.
