Title: Fragmentation in the eikonal picture [An eikonal primer]

Abstract

The eikonal approach to the scattering and production of high-energy particles is reviewed and extended. Several models for the high-energy behavior of the eikonal phase are discussed. We show how to introduce effects associated with the fragmentation of the incident particles into the eikonal framework, and indicate how these effects can influence the energy dependence of cross sections. The contributions of the triple-Regge region of phase space to the amplitude are examined. The importance of absorptive effects is clearly shown by demonstrating that the sign of the term linear in the triple-Pomeron coupling is negative in the total cross section.

We derive a closed Regge eikonal formula for summing the distinct types of multiple-Pomeron-exchange corrections to the Mueller-Regge contribution to the inclusive six-point functions a + b ..-->.. c + X in the fragmentation regions. If one takes into account final-state absorption (i.e., Pomeron exchange between c and the missing-mass state X), as Reggeon renormalization to the basic triple-Regge term (Y graph), then using the renormalized Y graph as input, the formula accounts for all the absorptive corrections within a Mueller-Regge framework and essentially can provide a complete description of the inclusive distribution in the fragmentation region. High energy hadron dynamics based on a Stochastic-field multi-eikonal theory

Multi-eikonal theory, using a stoichastic-field representation for collective long range rapidity correlations, is developed and applied to the calculation of Regge pole parameters, high transverse momentum enhancements, and fluctuation patterns in rapidity densities. If a short-range-order model, such as the one-dimensional planar bootstrap, with only leading t-channel meson poles, is utilized as input to the multi-eikonal method, the pole spectrum is modified in three ways; promotion and renormalization of leading trajectories (suggesting an effective pomeron above unity at intermediate energies), and a proliferation of dynamical secondary trajectories, reminiscent of dual models. The eikonal approach to high energy scattering and particle production is reviewed. The energy dependence of the eikonal phase is discussed. The effect of the fragmentation of the incident particles on the energy dependence of cross sections is considered. It is pointed out that the opening of diffractive channels leads to a decrease in the total cross section for a wide class of Feynman diagram models. (auth)
Toward a general description of two-body hadron reactions

A model for describing two-body high energy hadron reactions at energies above the resonance region is presented. Although no real theory yet exists, one can give a procedure for obtaining a (possibly correct) description of the amplitudes for any two-body resction (whatever the spins involved, including real and imaginary parts of amplitudes, any helicity flip pi exchange as well as vector and tensor exchanges, etc.). A model for soft high-energy scattering: Tensor pomeron and vector odderon

A model for soft high-energy scattering is developed. The model is formulated in terms of effective propagators and vertices for the exchange objects: the pomeron, the odderon, and the reggeons. The vertices are required to respect standard rules of QFT. The propagators are constructed taking into account the crossing properties of amplitudes in QFT and the power-law ansätze from the Regge model. We propose to describe the pomeron as an effective spin 2 exchange. This tensor pomeron gives, at high energies, the same results for the pp and pp{sup -bar} elastic amplitudes as the standard Donnachie–Landshoff pomeron. But with ourmore »« less
