Title: Single spin asymmetry in forward $p A$ collisions: Phenomenology at RHIC

Abstract

We confront the theoretical result of single spin asymmetry (SSA) A_N in forward pA collisions p↑A → hX including the gluon saturation effect with the recent preliminary experimental data from the PHENIX and STAR collaborations at RHIC. While we find overall reasonable agreement with the STAR data, our results indicate that the strong nuclear suppression of the asymmetry A_N ~ A^–1/3 observed by the PHENIX collaboration cannot be explained within the present understanding of this problem.

We calculate the single transverse spin asymmetry (STSA) in polarized proton-proton (p^↑+p) and polarized proton-nucleus (p^↑+A) collisions (AN) generated by a partonic lensing mechanism. The polarized proton is considered in the quark-diquark model while its interaction with the unpolarized target is calculated using the small-x/saturation approach, which includes multiple rescatterings and small-x evolution. The phase required for the asymmetry is caused by a final-state gluon exchange between the quark and diquark, as is standard in the lensing mechanism of Brodsky, Hwang and Schmidt. Our calculation combines the lensing mechanism with small-x physics in the saturation framework. The expression we obtain for the asymmetry A_N of the produced quarks has the following properties: (i) The asymmetry is generated by the dominant elastic scattering contribution and 1/more »« less

In 2015, the PHENIX collaboration has measured very forward (η > 6.8) single spin asymmetries of inclusive neutrons in transversely polarized proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions at a center of mass energy of 200 GeV. A previous publication from this dataset concentrated on the nuclear dependence of such asymmetries. In this measurement the explicit transverse momentum dependence of inclusive neutron single spin asymmetries for proton-proton collisions is extracted using a bootstrapping unfolding technique on the transverse momenta. This explicit transverse momentum dependence will help improve the understanding of the mechanisms that create these asymmetries
