Abstract Many natural materials present an ideal “recipe” for the development of future damage‐tolerant lightweight structural materials. One notable example is the brick‐and‐mortar structure of nacre, found in mollusk shells, which produces high‐toughness, bioinspired ceramics using polymeric mortars as a compliant phase. Theoretical modeling has predicted that use of metallic mortars could lead to even higher damage‐tolerance in these materials, although it is difficult to melt‐infiltrate metals into ceramic scaffolds as they cannot readily wet ceramics. Bioinspired nacre-like alumina with a bulk-metallic glass-forming alloy as a compliant phase

Bioinspired ceramics with micron-scale ceramic "bricks" bonded by a metallic "mortar" are projected to result in higher strength and toughness ceramics, but their processing is challenging as metals do not typically wet ceramics. To resolve this issue, we made alumina structures using rapid pressureless infiltration of a zirconium-based bulk-metallic glass mortar that reactively wets the surface of freeze-cast alumina preforms. Investigations of iron-alumina metal-ceramic composites: Effect of ruthenium and nickel on the hydrogen reduction of trivalent iron during formation of the composite

Effect of ruthenium and nickel on the reduction behavior of Fe[sup 3+]/Al[sub 2]O[sub 3] to give the Fe-Al[sub 2]O[sub 3] metal-ceramic composite has been studied by employing x-ray diffraction, [sup 57]Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy and electron microscopy. Both ruthenium and nickel promote the hydrogen reduction of Fe[sup 3+], giving nearly total reduction to the metallic phase at 1,220K. Besides metallic iron in the ferromagnetic [alpha]-form, paramagnetic alloys of Fe with Ru and Ni are formed during the reduction.

Synthesis of bioinspired ice-templated bulk metallic glass-alumina composites with intertwined dendritic structure

We have successfully developed bulk-metallic glass (BMG) composites reinforced with intertwined dendritic alumina, inspired by the structure of nacre (Abalone shells). We harness the dendritic growth of ice crystals in a thermal gradient to assemble an alumina with dendritic pore architecture, which is then infiltrated with BMG-forming melt to make a bioinspired, micrometer-scale, intertwined BMG-alumina composite. The composite exhibits ultra-high strength with exceptional relative compressive strength, far better than ceramic particulate BMG composites. Lastly, the method presented here can be further exploited to produce novel BMG composites with excellent mechanical properties.
