Title: Prompt and delayed spectroscopy of ${}^{203}{At}$ : Observation of a shears band and a $29 / 2^{+}$ isomeric state

Abstract

Using fusion-evaporation reactions, a gas-filled recoil separator, recoil-gating technique and recoil-isomer decay tagging technique we have extended the level scheme of ²⁰³At(N=118) significantly. We have observed an isomeric [τ=14.1(3)μs] state with a spin and parity of 29/2⁺. The isomeric state is suggested to originate from the π(h_9/2)Ⓧ||²⁰²Po;11^–> coupling, and it is depopulated through 286 keV E2 and 366 keV E3 transitions. Additionally, we have observed a cascade of magnetic-dipole transitions which is suggested to be generated by the shears mechanism.

A newly observed isomeric intruder ½⁺ state [T_½=3.5(6)ms] is identified in ²⁰³At using a gas-filled recoil separator and fusion-evaporation reactions. The isomer is depopulated through a cascade of E3 and mixed M1/E2 transitions to the 9/2^– ground state, and it is suggested to originate from the π(s_½)^–1 configuration. In addition, the structures above the ½⁺ state in ²⁰³At and ¹⁹⁷At are studied using in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy, recoil-decay tagging, and recoil-isomer decay tagging methods. As a result, the ½⁺ state is fed from 3/2⁺ and 5/2⁺ states, and the origin of these states are discussed.

Intrinsic electric quadrupole moment of the $K^{π} = 8^{-}$ isomeric state in ${}^{178}{Hf}$

The lifetime of the 9^- state in the rotational band based on the 4.0 s, K ^π = 8^-, isomeric state (¹⁷⁸Hf^m₁) from the decay of the 31-yr isomer (¹⁷⁸Hf^m₂) was determined to be 99(2) ps by means of the fast-timing technique using two LaBr₃ (Ce) scintillators. The δ (E2/M1) mixing ratios of the ΔI = 1 γ rays depopulating levels in this band were deduced from γ-γ angular correlations by using a ¹⁷⁸Hf^m₂ radioactive source located at the center of the Gammasphere HPGe detector array. Previous experiments observed a 4⁺ state in the N=28 nucleus S⁴⁴ and suggested that this state may exhibit a hindered E2-decay rate, inconsistent with being a member of the collective ground state band. The existence of ²⁶Al (t_1/2 = 7.17 × 10⁵ yr) in the interstellar medium provides a direct confirmation of ongoing nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy. The presence of a low-lying 0⁺ isomer (²⁶Al^m), however, severely complicates the astrophysical calculations. Here we present for the first time a study of the ²⁶Al^m (d, p)²⁷ Al reaction using an isomeric ²⁶Al beam. The selectivity of this reaction allowed the study of ℓ = 0 transfers to T = 1/2, and T = 3/2 states in ²⁷Al . Ground-state and isomeric-state cross sections for $^{181}$ Ta( $n, 2 n$ ) $^{180}$ Ta between 8 and 15 MeV

Using the activation technique, the cross section for the reaction ¹⁸¹Ta(n,2n)^180gTa was measured from 8 to 15 MeV in small energy steps to resolve inconsistencies in the existing database. The 93.4 keV γ ray from the decay of the ^180gTa ground state was recorded with a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector. The monitor reactions ²⁷Al(n,α)²⁴Na and ¹⁹⁷Au(n,2n)¹⁹⁶Au were used for neutron fluence determination. The ENDF VII.1 and TENDL 2011 evaluations are in considerable disagreement with the present data, which in turn agree very well with the majority of the existing data in the 14 MeV energy region.
