Title: Color confinement from fluctuating topology

Abstract

QCD possesses a compact gauge group, and this implies a non-trivial topological structure of the vacuum. In this contribution to the Gribov-85 Memorial volume, we first discuss the origin of Gribov copies and their interpretation in terms of fluctuating topology in the QCD vacuum. We then describe the recent work with E. Levin that links the confinement of gluons and color screening to the fluctuating topology, and discuss implications for spin physics, high energy scattering, and the physics of quark-gluon plasma.

QCD perturbation theory ignores the compact nature of the SU(3) gauge group that gives rise to the periodic θ vacuum of the theory. In this paper, we propose to modify the gluon propagator to reconcile perturbation theory with the anomalous Ward identities for the topological current in the θ vacuum. As a result, the gluon couples to the Veneziano ghost describing the tunneling transitions between different Chern-Simons sectors of the vacuum; we call the emerging gluon dressed by ghost loops a “glost.” We evaluate the glost propagator and find that it has the form G(p)=(p²+χ_top/p²)^-1 where χ_top is the Yang-Millsmore »« less

Color confinement in classical chromodynamics and in quantum chromodynamics in the one-mode approximation

The confinement of color is studied in SU(2) quantum chromodynamics (QCD) in the heavy quark limit. Two approximations are independently applied to elicit this property. One is the assumption of the classical limit, where the gauge potentials and the quark fields are treated as commuting c-number fields. A single quark is modeled as a delta-shell distribution and the gauge fields produced by this fixed source are examined as a function of the strong fine structure constant in the overcritical region. For an {ital S}{sub 4} space-time manifold global aspects of gauge fixing are investigated using the relation to topological quantum field theory (TQFT) on the gauge group. The partition function of this TQFT is shown to compute the regularized Euler character of a suitably defined space of gauge transformations. Topological properties of the space of solutions to a covariant gauge conditon on the orbit of a particular instanton are found using the SO(5) isometry group of the {ital S}{sub 4} base manifold. What the Gribov copy tells about confinement and the theory of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking

We performed lattice Landau gauge QCD simulation on {beta}=6.0,16{sup 4},24{sup 4},32{sup 4} and {beta}=6.4,32{sup 4},48{sup 4} and 56{sup 4} by adopting the gauge fixing that minimizes the norm of the gauge field, and measured the running coupling by using the gluon propagator and the ghost propagator. In view of ambiguity in the vertex renormalization factor Z{sub 1} in the lattice, we adjust the normalization of the running coupling by the perturbative QCD results near the highest momentum point. It has a maximum {alpha}{sub s}(q){approx_equal}2.1(3) at around q=0.5 GeV and decreases as q approaches 0, and the Kugo-Ojima parameter reached -0.83(2).more »« less

This four-day workshop focused on the wide variety of approaches to the non-perturbative physics of QCD.
