A recent sea-ice retreat west of the Antarctic Peninsula

This paper reports on a major sea ice retreat observed in the Bellingshausen Sea from mid 1988 through 1991. Data was gathered from satellite based microwave instrumentation which monitors sea ice. The ice retreat coincided with increased southerly winds, and record surface temperatures in 1989. The persistence of the ice retreat was probably due to ocean energy storage.

Sustained ocean changes contributed to sudden Antarctic sea ice retreat in late 2016

After nearly three decades of observed increasing trends of Antarctic sea ice extent, in September-October-November 2016, there was a dramatic decrease. Here we document factors that contributed to that decrease. An atmosphere-only model with a specified positive convective heating anomaly in the eastern Indian/western Pacific Ocean, representing the record positive precipitation anomalies there in September-October-November 2016, produces an anomalous atmospheric Rossby wave response with mid- and high latitude surface wind anomalies that contribute to the decrease of Antarctic sea ice extent. Predicting Land-Ice Retreat and Sea-Level Rise with the Community Earth System Model

Coastal stakeholders need defensible predictions of 21st century sea-level rise (SLR). IPCC assessments suggest 21st century SLR of {approx}0.5 m under aggressive emission scenarios. Semi-empirical models project SLR of {approx}1 m or more by 2100. Although some sea-level contributions are fairly well constrained by models, others are highly uncertain. Recent studies suggest a potential large contribution ({approx}0.5 m/century) from the marine-based West Antarctic Ice Sheet, linked to changes in Southern Ocean wind stress. How Tropical Pacific Surface Cooling Contributed to Accelerated Sea Ice Melt from 2007 to 2012 as Ice is Thinned by Anthropogenic Forcing

Over the past 40 years the Arctic sea ice minimum in September has declined. The period between 2007 and 2012 showed accelerated melt contributed to the record minima of 2007 and 2012. Here, observational and model evidence shows that the changes in summer sea ice since the 2000s reflects a continuous anthropogenically forced melting masked by interdecadal variability of Arctic atmospheric circulation.
