The three-dimensional Monte Carlo code ERO has been used to simulate dedicated DIII-D experiments in which Mo and W samples with different sizes were exposed to controlled and well-diagnosed divertor plasma conditions to measure the gross and net erosion rates. Gross and net erosion rates of silicon from silicon carbide (SiC) coatings were measured in the divertor of DIII-D under well diagnosed reactor-relevant plasma conditions. Amorphous and crystalline SiC coatings on graphite with thickness of ~80 nm and ~250 μm, respectively, were exposed near an attached outer strike point of lower single null L-mode plasmas using the Divertor Material Evaluation System (DiMES). Modeling, analysis, and code/data validation of DIII-D tokamak divertor experiments on ELM and non-ELM plasma tungsten sputtering erosion

We analyzed recent DIII-D tokamak tungsten divertor probe experiments using advanced, coupled, sputter erosion/redeposition, plasma, and surface response code packages. Modeling is done for ELM-ing H-mode, and L-mode plasmas, impinging on various size tungsten deposits on Divertor Material Evaluation System (DiMES) carbon probes. The simulations compute 3-D, full kinetic, sub-gyromotion, impurity sputtering and transport, including changes in tungsten surface composition and response due to mixed deuterium and carbon ions irradiation. Micro-trench measurements of the net deposition of carbon impurity ions in the DIII-D divertor and the resulting suppression of surface erosion

In this work, we report carbon impurity ion incident angles and deposition rates, along with silicon erosion rates, from measurements of micro-engineered trenches on a silicon surface exposed to L-mode deuterium plasmas at the DIII-D divertor. Post exposure ex-situ analysis determined elemental maps and concentrations, carbon deposition thicknesses, and erosion of silicon surfaces. Carbon deposition profiles on the trench floor showed carbon ion shadowing that was consistent with ERO calculations of average carbon ion angle distributions (IADs) for both polar and azimuthal angles.
