The goal of this paper is to provide an overview the coastal fog microphysical measurements and to evaluate microphysical parameterizations based on the C-FOG (Toward Improving Coastal Fog Prediction) field project. C-FOG is designed to advance understanding of liquid fog formation, development, and dissipation over coastal environments to improve fog predictability and monitoring. Ice fog suppression experiments on the Fort Wainwright Power Plant cooling pond were conducted during the winters of 1974-76. Baseline information studies occupied a sizeable portion of the available ice fog weather in 1974-75. Hexadecanol was added to the pond and dramatically improved visibility by reducing fog generated from water vapor released by the pond at -14C. Although this temperature was not low enough to create ice fog, the cold vapor fog created was equally as devasting to visibility in the vicinity of the pond. An experimental cooler-condenser system was constructed at the coal-fired heating and electric plant on the Fairbanks campus of the University of Alaska to evaluate its potential to reduce ice fog and other pollutant stack emissions in a subarctic environment. Ice fog near the Ft. Wainwright cooling pond creates a visibility hazard. Observations show a substantial reduction in visibility along both private and public roadways in the path of the cooling pond's ice fog plume. This reduction in visibility increases as the ambient air temperature decreases. Visibility was less than 215 m (700 ft) on the Richardson Highway on the average of 8 days for each of the 3 data years. Research on control technology for ice fog from mobile sources

Automotive generated ice fog is a form of air pollution that results when exhaust water vapor freezes into minute particles which form a dense fog. The major control technique evaluated was cooling the exhaust gases to well below the dew point, thus condensing water vapor into a liquid stream before final discharge. During the winters of 1974-75 and 1975-76 the Arctic Environmental Research Station evaluated 12 cooler-condensers on nine inservice vehicles.
