A PIN-diode-based 1D x-ray camera and a scintillator-based 1D x-ray camera, both with a microsecond to submicrosecond time resolution, have been developed to perform time-resolved imaging of transient, low-intensity, suprathermal x-rays associated with magnetohydrodynamic instabilities disrupting a plasma jet. These cameras have a high detection efficiency over a broad x-ray band, a wide field of view, and the capability to produce >50 time-resolved frames with a ≤1 μs time resolution. Extreme ultra-violet burst, particle heating, and whistler wave emission in fast magnetic reconnection induced by kink-driven Rayleigh-Taylor instability

A spatially localized energetic extreme ultra-violet (EUV) burst is imaged at the presumed position of fast magnetic reconnection in a plasma jet produced by a coaxial helicity injection source; this EUV burst indicates strong localized electron heating. A circularly polarized high frequency magnetic field perturbation is simultaneously observed at some distance from the reconnection region indicating that the reconnection emits whistler waves and that Hall dynamics likely governs the reconnection. Spectroscopic measurement also shows simultaneous fast ion heating. The electron heating is consistent with Ohmic dissipation, while the ion heating is consistent with ion trajectories becoming stochastic.

Laboratory demonstration of slow rise to fast acceleration of arched magnetic flux ropes

We demonstrate the slow rise to fast acceleration of an arched plasma-filled magnetic flux rope. The flux rope expansion is inhibited by an externally applied customizable strapping field. When the strapping field is not too strong and not too weak, expansion forces build up while the flux rope is in the strapping field region. When the flux rope moves to a critical height beyond the peak strapping field region, the plasma accelerates quickly corresponding to the observed slow rise to fast acceleration of solar eruptions. This behavior is in agreement with the predictions of the torus instability.

Comparisons of coded aperture imaging using various apertures and decoding methods. [gamma camera imaging of radionuclides in tissues]

The utility of coded aperture ..gamma.. camera imaging of radioisotope distributions in Nuclear Medicine is in its ability to give depth information about a three dimensional source. We have calculated imaging with Fresnel zone plate and multiple pinhole apertures to produce coded shadows and reconstruction of these shadows using correlation, Fresnel diffraction, and Fourier transform deconvolution. Comparisons of the coded apertures and decoding methods are made by evaluating their point response functions both for in-focus and out-of-focus image planes.
