Evolution of critical pressure with increasing Fe substitution in the heavy-fermion system ${URu}_{2 - x} {Fe}_{x} {Si}_{2}$

Measurements of electrical resistivity, ρ(T ), were performed under quasihydrostatic pressure up to P ~ 2.2 GPa to determine the pressure dependence of the so-called hidden order (HO) and large-moment antiferromagnetic (LMAFM) phases for the URu_2-xFexSi2 system with x = 0.025, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20. As the Fe concentration (x) is increased, we observed that a smaller amount of external pressure, P_c, is required to induce the HO → LMAFM phase transition. A critical pressure of P_c ~ 1.2 GPa at x = 0.025 reduces to P_c ~ 0 at x = 0.15, suggesting the URu_2-xFe_xSi₂ system is fullymore »« less

Inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of phonon dynamics in ${URu}_{2} {Si}_{2}$

We report high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of the acoustic phonons of URu2Si2. At all temperatures, the longitudinal acoustic phonon linewidths are anomalously broad at small wave vectors revealing a previously unknown anharmonicity. The phonon modes do not change significantly upon cooling into the hidden order phase. Our data suggest that the increase in thermal conductivity in the hidden order phase cannot be driven by a change in phonon dispersions or lifetimes. Hence, the phonon contribution to the thermal conductivity is likely much less significant compared to that of the magnetic excitations in the low temperature phase.

We investigate quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in URu_2–xFe_xSi₂ single crystals using ultrafast optical-pump optical-probe (OPOP) spectroscopy as a function of temperature and Fe substitution (x), crossing from the hidden-order (HO) phase (x = 0) to the large-moment antiferromagnet (LMAFM) phase (x = 0 .12). Here, at low temperature, the dynamics for x = 0 and x = 0 .12 are consistent with the low-energy electronic structure of the HO and LMAFM phases that emerge from the high-temperature paramagnetic (PM) phase. Electronic structure of the heavy-fermion caged compound ${Ce}_{3} {Pd}_{20} X_{6} (X = Si, Ge)$ studied by density functional theory and photoelectron spectroscopy

The electronic structure of Ce₃Pd₂₀X₆ (X = Si, Ge) has been studied using detailed density functional theory (DFT) calculations and high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) measurements. The orbital decomposition of the electronic structure by DFT calculations indicates that Ce atoms at the (8c) site surrounded by 16 Pd atoms have a more localized nature and a tendency to be magnetic. Ce atoms in the (4a) site surrounded by 12 Pd and 6 X atoms, on the other, show only a negligible magnetic moment. Dehybridization of $f$ and $d$ states in the heavy-fermion system ${YbRh}_{2} {Si}_{2}$

We report an optically induced reduction of the ƒ-d hybridization in the prototypical heavy-fermion compound YbRh₂Si₂. We use femtosecond time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to monitor changes of spectral weight and binding energies of the Yb 4ƒ and Rh 4d states before the lattice temperature increases after pumping. Overall, the ƒ-d hybridization decreases smoothly with increasing electronic temperature up to ~250K but changes slope at ~100K. This temperature scale coincides with the onset of coherent Kondo scattering and with thermally populating the first excited crystal electrical field level.
