The bimodal distribution structure of electron density brought about by the Hall effect in the electron diffusion region during magnetic reconnection

The Hall effect is suggested to be responsible for decoupling of electrons and ions in plasma during magnetic reconnection. It leads to redistribution of charged particles during magnetic reconnection. In this paper, charge distribution brought about by the Hall effect during magnetic reconnection is studied by using compressible Hall magnetohydrodynamics numerical simulation. Decoupling of electrons and ions in plasma can be clearly shown in this numerical simulation result. The bimodal structure of electron distribution in the electron diffusion region as well as its motion during magnetic reconnection have been found and discussed.

Model of electron pressure anisotropy in the electron diffusion region of collisionless magnetic reconnection

A new model of the electron pressure anisotropy in the electron diffusion region in collisionless magnetic reconnection is presented for the case of antiparallel configuration of magnetic fields. The plasma anisotropy is investigated as source of collisionless dissipation. By separating electrons in the vicinity of the neutral line into two broad classes of inflowing and accelerating populations, it is possible to derive a simple closure for the off-diagonal electron pressure component. The appearance of these two electron populations near the neutral line is responsible for the anisotropy and collisionless dissipation in the magnetic reconnection. Particle description of the electron diffusion region in collisionless magnetic reconnection

The present study clarifies the dissipation mechanism of collisionless magnetic reconnection in two-dimensional system based on particle dynamics. The electrons are accelerated without thermalization in the electron diffusion region, carry out the meandering oscillation, and are ejected away from the X-line. This electron behavior not only generates the electron inertia resistivity based on the particle description, but also it can be the origin of the electron viscosity resulting in the off-diagonal pressure tensor term in the generalized Ohm's law near the X-line. Evidence for an Elongated (>60 Ion Skin Depths) Electron Diffusion Region during Fast Magnetic Reconnection

Observations of an extremely elongated electron diffusion region occurring during fast reconnection are presented. Cluster spacecraft in situ observations of an expanding reconnection exhaust reveal a broad current layer ({approx}10 ion skin depths thick) supporting the reversal of the reconnecting magnetic field together with an intense current embedded at the center that is due to a super-Alfvenic electron outflow jet with transverse scale of {approx}9 electron skin depths. The electron jet extends at least 60 ion skin depths downstream from the X-line.

Identification of the Electron-Diffusion Region during Magnetic Reconnection in a Laboratory Plasma

We report the first identification of the electron-diffusion region, where demagnetized electrons are accelerated to super-Alfvenic speed, in a reconnecting laboratory plasma. The width of the electron-diffusion region scales with the electron skin depth [{approx}(5.5-7.5)c/{omega}{sub pe}] and the peak electron outflow velocity scales with the electron Alfven velocity [{approx}(0.12-0.16)V{sub eA}], independent of ion mass.
