Coulomb blockade effects in a topological insulator grown on a high-T_c cuprate superconductor

The evidence for proximity-induced superconductivity in heterostructures of topological insulators and high-T_c cuprates has been intensely debated. We use molecular-beam epitaxy to grow thin films of topological insulator Bi₂Te₃ on a cuprate Bi₂Sr₂CaCu₂O_8+x, and study the surface of Bi₂Te₃ using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. In few unit-cell thick Bi₂Te₃ films, we find a V-shaped gap-like feature at the Fermi energy in dI/dV spectra. By reducing the coverage of Bi₂Te₃ films to create nanoscale islands, we discover that this spectral feature dramatically evolves into a much larger hard gap, which can be understood as a Coulomb blockade gap. The electronic structure of the new Bi-based high-temperature superconductor, with T/sub c/ onsets above 110 K, is shown to be altered considerably from that of the other cuprate superconductors by the presence of Bi. There are Bi-O bands which cross the Fermi level, and the two-dimensional character of the bands is even greater than that of previous cuprates. Electronic structure and two-band superconductivity in unconventional high- T_c cuprates Ba₂ CuO_3+δ

We report that the recently discovered cuprate superconductor Ba₂CuO_3+δ exhibits a high T_c≃73 K at δ ≃ 0.2. The polycrystal grown under high pressure has a structure similar to La₂CuO₄ but with dramatically different lattice parameters due to the CuO₆ octahedron compression. The crystal field in the compressed Ba₂CuO₄ leads to an inverted Cu 3d e_g complex with the d_x²-y² orbital sitting below the d_{3z² - r²} and an electronic structure highly unusual compared to the conventional cuprates. Microscopic model of hybrid pairing: A common approach to heavy-fermion and high-T/sub c/ superconductivity

Real-space pairing among hybridized electrons in a periodic system is proposed. It is mediated by the s-d exchange of the type which leads to the Kondo effect in impurity systems. The effective Hamiltonian in the hybridized basis is transformed into a form similar to that for a narrow-band case. The importance of the results for both the heavy-fermion and the high-T/sub c/ superconductors is briefly discussed.
