Beam-Target Double-Spin Asymmetry $A_{LT}$ in Charged Pion Production from Deep Inelastic Scattering on a Transversely Polarized ${}^{3}{He}$ Target at $1.4 < Q^{2} < 2.7 {GeV}^{2}$

We report the first measurement of the double-spin asymmetry A_LT for charged pion electroproduction in semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering on a transversely polarized ³He target. The kinematics focused on the valence quark region, 0.16 < x < 0.35 with 1.4 < Q² < 2.7 GeV². The corresponding neutron A_LT asymmetries were extracted from the measured ³He asymmetries and proton/³He cross section ratios using the effective polarization approximation. These new data probe the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function g_1T^q and therefore provide access to quark spin-orbit correlations. Various theories beyond the standard model predict new particles with masses in the sub-eV range with very weak couplings to ordinary matter. A P-odd and T-odd interaction between polarized and unpolarized nucleons proportional to s-vector{center_dot}r-vector involving a scalar coupling g{sub s} at one vertex and a pseudoscalar coupling g{sub p} at the other vertex is one such possibility. We show that measurements of the transverse spin relaxation rate {Gamma}{sub 2} for polarized gas can be used to set limits on g{sub s}g{sub p} for boson masses in the 10{mu}eV to 100 meV range, corresponding to distances from centimeters to micrometers.more »« less
