Abstract

The present invention relates to a hermetically sealed Li.sub.2 O-Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 -SiO.sub.2 glass ceramic-aluminum containing stainless steel composite body and a method of producing the body. The composite body includes an oxide interfacial region between the glass ceramic and metal, wherein the interfacial region consists essentially of an Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 layer. The interfacial Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 region includes constituents of both the metal and glass ceramic.

A new family of aluminum-containing austenitic stainless steels has been used to make strong, hermetic glass-ceramic to metal seals. The new alloys contain approximately 4 to 5 wt % aluminum, and are strengthened via the precipitation of a secondary hardening phase during a typical glass to metal sealing and crystallization cycle. This is unlike other stainless steels which cannot be strengthened during heat treatment and are actually weakened during glass crystallization. In this paper, data are given on thermal expansion, alloy yeild strength, metallography, hermeticity, bond strength, weldability and glass-ceramic/metal interfacial structure. 13 refs., 8 figs., 1 tab.
Highly conductive electrolyte composites containing glass and ceramic, and method of manufacture

An electrolyte composite is manufactured by pressurizing a mixture of sodium ion conductive glass and an ionically conductive compound at between 12,000 and 24,000 pounds per square inch to produce a pellet. The resulting pellet is then sintered at relatively lower temperatures (800.degree. C.-1200.degree. C.), for example 1000.degree. C., than are typically required (1400.degree. C.) when fabricating single constituent ceramic electrolytes. The resultant composite is 100 percent conductive at 250.degree. C. with conductivity values of 2.5 to 4.times.10.sup.-2 (ohm-cm).sup.-1. The matrix exhibits chemical stability against sodium for 100 hours at 250.degree. to 300.degree. C.

A method of removing Li.sub.2 O present in an electrolyte predominantly of LiCl and KCl. The electrolyte is heated to a temperature not less than about 500.degree. C. and then Al is introduced into the electrolyte in an amount in excess of the stoichiometric amount needed to convert the Li.sub.2 O to a Li-Al alloy and lithium aluminate salt. The salt and aluminum are maintained in contact with agitation for a time sufficient to convert the Li.sub.2 O.
