The present invention relates to a hermetically sealed Li{sub 2}O-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}-SiO{sub 2} glass ceramic-aluminum containing stainless steel composite body and a method of producing the body. The composite body includes an oxide interfacial region between the glass ceramic and metal, wherein the interfacial region consists essentially of an Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} layer. The interfacial Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} region includes constituents of both the metal and glass ceramic. 8 figs.
