Method: 16 Dynamax TDR probes were installed in each ring in two microsite locations: a pair of 0.2- and 0.5-cm probes was installed under the canopy of four randomly selected Larrea plants in each plot, with another pair installed nearby in the interspace between perennial plants. Initially, 44% of the 0.5-m probes were not fully inserted into the soil because rocks in the soil impeded installation. Nevada Desert Face Facility Soil Texture and Particle Size

Samples collected in 1997 from center of each plot before CO2 treatment commenced. Samples were oven dried (60C) and total weight determined. Sample were fractionated using a 2mm sieve and weights of rock fraction (>= 2mm) and soil fraction (<2mm) determined. Soil fraction was further analyzed for particle size ([NDFF_Soil_Particle_Size.xls]).Soil fractions of samples collected at NDFF([NDFF_Soil_Texture.xls]) in 1997 before CO2 treatment commenced. Samples were processed through 62.5 um sieve to remove sand fraction then analysized for fine soil particle size on Micromeretics Saturn DigiSizer 5200.(see http://soilslab.dri.edu/instrument_dig.htm)

At a site near Rock Valley, Nevada, dominated by volcanic rocks, both Larrea tridentata (Sesse and Moc. ex DC.) Cov. And Lycium andersonii A. Gray were restricted in distribution. Larrea tridentata did not grow in the many small washes in the area, but L. andersonii grew only in the washes. Ambrosia dumosa (A. Gray) Payne was more dense and more dominant in wash areas than in nonwash areas.

Transpirational and net photosynthetic rates of several species of desert shrubs were measured as a function of season and environmental variables at the Nevada Test Site in the northern Mojave Desert. Drought-deciduous species, Ambrosia dumosa (Grey) Payne, Lycium andersonii Grey, and Lycium pallidum Miers, had higher maximum rates and greater water loss than the evergreen, Larrea tridentata Munz, and summer green, Krameria parvifolia Benth., species.
