Abstract

The observed radiosonde data from the Comprehensive Aerological Reference Data Set (CARDS) (Eskridge et al. 1995) were taken as the primary input for obtaining the series. These data were for the global radiosonde observational network through 2001. Since 2002, the AEROSTAB data (uper-air observations obtained through communication channels), collected at RIHMI-WDC in Obninsk, have been used. Both of these data sources were for the global radiosonde observational network. Surface temperatures and thickness-derived temperatures from a 63-station, globally distributed radiosonde network have been used to estimate global, hemispheric, and zonal annual and seasonal temperature deviations. Most of the temperature values used were column-mean temperatures, obtained from the differences in height (thickness) between constant-pressure surfaces at individual radiosonde stations. The pressure-height data before 1980 were obtained from published values in Monthly Climatic Data for the World. Global temperature variations in the troposphere and stratosphere, 1958-1982

A network of 63 well-distributed radiosonde stations has been used to estimate mean-annual temperature variations at the surface and for 85-30 kPa (850-300 mb), 30-10 kPa, 10-5 kPa, 10-3 kPa, and surface 10 kPa layers for five climatic zones, both hemispheres, and the world for the interval 1958-81. At the surface and in the 85-30 kPa layer there was global cooling of about 0.5/sup 0/C between 1958 and about 1970, and global warming since, with 1980 and 1981 values approximately 0.1/sup 0/C warmer than observed in 1958 and 1959. Surface temperatures and thickness-derived temperatures from a network of 63 well-distributed radiosonde stations have been used to estimate global and zonal annual and seasonal temperatures anomalies for the period 1958 through the summer of 1986. These anomaly estimates were made using a 1958-1977 reference period mean. Anomaly estimates are provided for surface, troposphere (850-300 mb), tropopause layer (300-100 mb), and low stratosphere (100-50 mb); (100-30mb) layers and for polar (60{degrees}-90{degrees}), temperate (30{degrees}-60{degrees}), subtropical (10{degrees}-30{degrees}), and equatorial (10{degrees}N - 10{degrees}S) zones, as well as the tropics, both hemispheres, and the world.

Jones of the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) with help from colleagues at the CRU and other institutions. Some of the earliest work in producing these temperature series dates back to Jones et al. TRACER-Sonde Ozonesonde and radiosonde data

The TRACER-Sonde campaign used electrochemical cell ozonesondes to measure vertical profiles of ozone, which can be a tracer for convective mixing, in conjunction with meteorological variables measured by a radiosonde. There were 32 days in which TRACER-Sonde had twice-daily ozonesondes from the TRACER M1 site at La Porte at ~11Z and ~15Z (6 am and 10 am LT). The ozonesonde profiles provide an additional method to validate boundary-layer height determinations and test assumptions about vertical mixing in pre-convective environments. There are six additional days with ~15Z radiosonde only (no ozone data) profiles.
