Realizing that pollution prevention is a better course of action than treatment and disposal is the foundation of today`s regulations which are based on the experience of the past, when billions of dollars were spent on environmental restoration. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), through its regulations and its incentive programs, clearly favors pollution prevention, defined as the use of procedures and processes that reduce or eliminate the generation of pollution at the source. Pollution prevention includes reducing the volume of waste generated as well as its toxicity. The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has undertaken the Integrated Pollution Prevention Initiative (IPPI), an effort to assist in research, application, and dissemination of pollution prevention principles. Under IPPI, a variety of new environmental technologies have been developed and existing technologies have been applied, including work on computer-aided process design applications. In this chapter, the authors discuss the benefits of computer-aided process design and simulation for pollution prevention. The discussion draws heavily upon the experience gained from their research work at NJIT under IPPI.
