EPA does pollution prevention research
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) gets its share of criticism, with a particularly heavy dose directed at its enforcement (alternately too zealous or too lenient) of environmental regulations. Sometimes that criticism becomes loud enough to upstage EPA`s research into new technologies for pollution prevention, waste management and resource protection. EPA`s work in technology assessment and evaluation translates into one of the Agency`s most valuable services, especially for small and medium-sized companies that lack full-scale, in-house environmental research capabilities. Over the past months, EPA:s Risk Reduction Engineering Laboratory has worked with six state governments to test and evaluate 41 pollution prevention technologies under the Waste Reduction Innovative Technology Evaluation Program (WRITE). The research focused on pollution prevention opportunities and environmental needs of small and medium-sized companies in industries ranging from coatings to electronics, metal plating and finishing, printing, steel and surface cleaning operations. A brief overview is presented of some of the technologies and evaluation results.
