Change in fracture mode and selective dissolution of austenitic stainless steels
- Indian Inst. of Technology, Bombay (India)
The role of dealloying in stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of non-ferrous alloys has been well established through several studies. Fritz et al through application of external potential, showed that in a Cu-18% Au alloy, the selective dissolution of Cu is responsible for SCC. Film formed on Cu-Zn alloys has been attributed to cleavage fracture. In the present study the presence of more active Mn and more noble Cu in austenitic stainless steel (Grade-1) is clearly shown to exhibit characteristics similar to that of Cu-Au and Cu-Zn alloys where the selective dissolution favors intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) in contrast to transgranular stress corrosion cracking (TGSCC) generally observed in the environments tested.
