The effect of MnO{sub 2} and TiO{sub 2} doping on the densification and microstructural development of {alpha}-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} has been investigated over a wide sintering regime. A colloidal technique was applied for the mixing of dopants in order to achieve a uniform distribution and homogeneous microstructures. The sintered density, average grain size, and microhardness were evaluated along with the microstructural features of the sintered samples. Doping with MnO{sub 2} and MnO{sub 2}/TiO{sub 2} was found to increase the final sintered density and microhardness values. Excessive grain growth and second phase formation were observed in a-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} - MnO{sub 2} compositions which were sintered above 1350{degrees}C.
