MgO exhibits inferior thermal shock resistance as a consequence of poor mechanical properties combined with a large thermal expansion coefficient. Addition of SiC particles, having a high thermal conductivity, would be expected to alter the physical properties of the composites. Relevant physical properties, such as elastic modulus, thermal expansion coefficient and thermal conductivity, have been modelled. Experimental results have been compared with the computed evaluations. Good agreement has been obtained when factors such as remanent porosity and the interfacial structure between the SiC particles and the MgO are taken in consideration.
