High resolution electron microscopy has been used to examine the interfacial structure of two MgO- 20vol% SiC composites, in one of which SiC particles were thermally treated to form a SiO{sub 2} layer before adding into MgO. Both of the composites showed well bonded interfaces but in the first composite, the interface is not coherently bonded, while the coherent interface can be readily observed in the pre-oxidised SiC particle reinforced composite. The Mg{sub 2}SiO{sub 4} phase is precipitated in the aggregated SiC particles in the both composites, which formed coherent and semi-coherent interfaces with the MgO grains and the SiC particles.
