Experiments were conducted to determine the anelastic response of samples of monolithic Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} and Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} composites reinforced with SiC whiskers or particulates. For each material, the load was removed during high temperature creep and the subsequent load-displacement response was recorded. The results show that the monolithic material and a composite with 5 vol % of SiC particulates exhibit no anelastic response on load removal, but there is significant anelastic recovery in composites reinforced with 15 vol %of SiC whiskers or with 15 vol % of SiC particulates. The results are interpreted in terms of the hypothesis that there is an anelastic creep recovery whenever there is some form if interconnecting network within the material.
